Chicken and waffles, chicken and doughnuts, apparently every dessert goes well with fried chicken. Fried chicken and doughnuts are a bit of a thing in D.C. these days. First GBD opened, then Astro Doughnuts followed. I didn’t get a chance to visit GBD but I made my way to Astro Doughnuts last Friday afternoon. The restaurant is tiny. There are no chairs or tables, just a counter to order food. There is a very rushed, get in get out mentality when you order at Astro Doughnuts. Though admittedly I went right at noon, and the line was out the door.
The menu at Astro Doughnuts only has a few items, so the restaurant has boxes of chicken pre-made so that it only takes a few seconds after ordering to get your meal. I had my heart set on a crème brûlée doughnut but it was already sold out at 12 p.m. Instead I ordered the special of the day, passion fruit and blackberry with two pieces of fried chicken.
The fried chicken was good. It’s classic Southern buttermilk fried chicken with flour breading. I think it could have been great if it had been warmer. As my friend said, fried chicken is best when it’s hot out of the fryer or cold from the refrigerator.
Astro Doughnuts gets a thumbs up from me. Next time I’ll get there earlier so I can taste the crème brûlée doughnut.
